    Avery Maharaja

    $9.50 / 22oz

Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, meaning “great”, andrajan, meaning “king”. Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley – fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. Welcome to his kingdom!

Weekly Beer Tasting at Cork and Fork #Gainsville
Tonight, we are serving the following beers during our tasting:**SweetWater IPA — This mammoth India Pale Ale is loaded with intense hop character and subjected to an extensive dry hopping process. Unfiltered.**Anderson Valley Spring Valley — Spring Hornin’ is a really good beer, but a bit of a misnomer. The style is truer to a pale ale, with the malt being a bit more present and the hops less pronounced than I expected. As a pale ale, it’s a truly solid beer; I won’t have any trouble finishing the six-pack.**Bell’s Smitten Golden Rye — Drawn from one of the oldest recipes from Bell’s Brewery, Smitten Ale began as part of a series of rye beers at their Eccentric Cafe. The combination of sharp citrus and resinous flavors from the hops with the earthy, rustic overtones of the rye malt contribution yield an interesting take on the American Pale Ale.**SweetWater 420 Extra Pale Ale — SweetWater 420 Extra Pale Ale is the most popular beer from SweetWater. It is a tasty West Coast Style Pale Ale with a stimulating hop character and crisp finish.

Virginia Craft Beer Events Happening Today, Feb 28th

So before I get to the long list of events today I wanted to share this.  You probably heard the news but just in case….

Bill Allowing Brewery on a Farm License Passes

RICHMOND, VA – Senate Bill 430, a bill which legally defines breweries located on a farm, passed both houses of the Virginia General Assembly and is awaiting the Governor’s signature. The Virginia Craft Brewers Guild, an affiliate of the Virginia Manufacturers Association (VMA), has led the business coalition supporting this bill, which will grant breweries located on a farm similar privileges as farm wineries. The farm breweries are required to grow and use their agricultural product, such as hops or barley, in its beer.

Senator John Watkins led the bill through the Virginia Senate, where it passed 35-3. The House of Delegates passed SB430 unanimously Monday, 97-0.

“The craft beer industry is a growing part of Virginia’s economy, ” said Lisa Pumphrey of Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery. “Senator Watkins recognized that farm breweries offer an avenue for small business generation in rural areas. The bill will allow new breweries to flourish and contribute to Virginia’s tourism industry.”

SB 430 builds on the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild’s record of legislative success. The Guild also successfully pressed for legislation enabling breweries to sell beer for consumption in their tasting rooms. SB 604, which was passed by the General Assembly and signed into law in 2012, changed a provision limiting on-premise consumption. Since the law was changed, the craft beer industry in Virginia has seen 75% growth in the number of breweries, supporting 8,123 FTE jobs and granting the Commonwealth an economic impact of $623 million.

About Virginia Craft Brewers Guild

Virginia’s craft beer industry supports 8,163 FTE jobs, and has an economic impact of $623 million. Virginia Craft Brewers Guild is an affiliate of the Virginia Manufacturers Association. The purpose of the Guild is to organize craft brewers for purposes of economic development, business development, supply chain management, tourism and government affairs. Three Notch’d Brewing Can Tasting at Wine Warehouse #Charlottesville
THREE NOTCH’D BREWING NOW IN CANS! TASTING FRIDAY FEBRUARY 28thThe newest addition to the local packaged beer scene is a pair of canned beers from Three Notch’d Brewing Co. After only 6 months of operation in the old Monticello Dairy building, they have made the jump from draft to cans. The first two efforts are from their core selection, the 40 Mile IPA and Hydraulion Red Ale, both available in 6packs at $9.49. Those interested in seeing just how well the beers translate into the cans before buying them can stop by for a taste Friday 28th and give them a whirl. With the success expected from these canned ventures, we can only hope to see the No Veto Brown or The Trader Crystal Hopped Saison follow in to cans shortly.

    Friday, Beer:
    Anderson Valley Spring Hornin’ IPA
    $2.33 / 12oz
    $12.95 / 6 pack
Appearance: Medium gold with a dense, long lasting 1” head.
Aroma: Spring flowers, citrus juice, dried grass, toasted bread, cinnamon.
Flavor: Woodruff, limoncello, clementine, toasted barley. Medium carbonation with fairly tame hop bitterness for an IPA.
Overall: The wood elves celebrated the Spring Equinox with great vigor this past year and the echoes reverberate in this outstanding beer. Randini yawped in celebration and declared Spring Hornin’ the official beer of the season, and a session beer for the stout at heart.
    6.8% ABV

    Troegs Nugget Nectar
    $2.55 / 12oz
    $13.95 / 6 pack
    $5.95 / 22oz
Appearance: Inviting orangey red with a thick cap of foam.
Aroma: Pine resin, straw, lillies, orange zest.
Flavor: Wet grass, sage, underbrush, orange scone, dark bread. Bitter, resinous hops perfectly balanced with chewy, sweet malt.
Overall: In their excitement, the others drained the bottle of delicious Nectar before Randini had a chance to sup and add his commentary.
    7.5% ABV

    Ovila Quad
    $9.95 / 750ml
Appearance: Medium brown with large, itssofluffyimgonnadie beige head.
Aroma: Grape jam, burnt candy sugar, molasses cookie, cherry compote, wet wood, warm spice, cranberry, woodsmoke.
Flavor: Plum, toffee, walnut, caramel cake, pear leather, coffee. At two years old this beer is showing extremely well and easily hides its 10+% ABV.
Overall: The stillness as the monks commune with their creator. With the heft of a well-worn wool robe, the elixir overwhelms the palate with flavors that bring to mind a fine Scotch. The good life…
    10.4% ABV

    DuClaw Hell on Wood
    $2.75 / 12oz
    $14.95 / 6 pack
Appearance: Medium gold with quickly receding head.
Aroma: Caramel, leather, cardamon, dill, fennel, lumber.
Flavor: Treacle, booze, coffee, french toast, chocolate, Southern Comfort. A bit dry and tannic from the barrel ageing. Tasty now and could stand to age for a while.
Overall: The monks are disappointed. The stillness has been abandoned by hedonistic mayhem of apocalyptic proportions. The rich beer smothers your soul allowing the 10.6% ABV to take you where you dare not go. Beware…
    10.6% ABV
