      Friday, Beer:

      $ 1.95 / 12oz

      $ 10.95 / 6pk

      In Europe this beer is labeled Budweiser Budvar. Sound familiar? This is the orginal Budweiser Bohemian Lager from the town of Budweis (the “-er” ending of Budweiser is genetive, meaning “of Budweis”.) In the late 1800s Adolphus-Busch (who started Anheiser-Busch) visited the Budweiser Budvar brewery, was inspired by the orginial Budweiser beer and created his Bohemian-syle lager he called…Budweiser. He later fought and won a battle to keep the Czech Budweiser beer from being marketed in America as Budweiser and is even fighting to get them to stop using the name in Europe, even though the Czech brewery had been using the name many years prior. American Budweiser’s bland, fizzy, rice-filled “beer” (even Adolphus Busch hated it! He called it “dot schlop” which we’re sure means something terrible in German) bears no resemblance to Czechvar’s noble hop aroma, rich, complex malt flavor, and rounded bitterness.

      5% ABV

      Lagunitas DayTime IPA

      $1.95 / 12oz

      $10.25 / 6pk

      Brewers are lately reacting to the “Imperialisation” of every style( Imperial Pilsners, Implerial Octoberfest, Imperial Kolsch etc.) by brewing lower alcohol “session” beers that are full in flavor but can be consumed in quantity without hitting the floor. This fantastic IPA is packed with flavor despite it’s low ABV. From the Lagunitas website “Sometimes you want a beer, then you realize how much crap you need to do before you call it a day. This is it. Nicely dosed with Big, Round Hop Flavors and a Toasty Malt Foundation to satisfy your every need. But it still lets you stay in the game to do what needs to be done. Yup”

      4.7% ABV

      Sinebrychoff Porter

      $ 4.25 / 11.2oz

      Founded in 1819, the Sinebrychoff brewery in Finland is the oldest brewery in Northern Europe. This Baltic Porter (it’s called a Baltic Porter even though it uses an ale yeast instead of the traditional lager yeast.) is full of chocolate sauce, dried fruit, and toffee flavors.

      Albemarle Cider Works Tasting at Wine Warehouse #Charlottesville
      As one of the leaders of the Virginia apple cider resurgence over the last 4+ years, Vintage Virginia Apples and Albemarle CiderWorks make very distinctive fermented ciders, specializing in their single apple varietal bottlings. On Friday we will be pouring four of their cider, including two of their most recent creations (Red Hill and Pomme Mary) and premiering their brand new single varietal, Gold Rush. Tasting will run from 4-7pm.If you have not tried any of the CiderWorks ciders before, they are the most distinctive and most uncompromisingly natural tasting ciders out there. You don’t get just the sweet pulp of the apple in the glass; it’s the whole apple orchard here, with skins, leaves, and even the dessicated fruit on the ground, coming out on in every sip. They also take great care in showcasing the distinct flavors of each apple variety, so you get complexity well beyond the typical dry/off-dry/sweet flavors to the diversity usually reserved for wine tastings. These are not ‘easy’ ciders built to appeal to the broadest possible market. They are built to express the singularity of true heirloom apples and the best of recent cultivars. Please also check out their web site for more information on their history and the ciders they produce.

    Saturday Beer Tasting
    September 21, 2013
    1:00-4:00 pm
    A couple of quick notes to start:

    My friends at Specialty Distributors went to visit Schlafly early this week. The good news is that Schlafly’s Tasmanian IPA will be back soon–likely in greater quantities than last year. The bad news is that Pumpkin Ale has been pushed back one more week–I know, I know, but we’ll get it back in stock soon. Watch this space!

    Also, be sure to mark next Saturday, September 28 on your calendar: our friend Andy Gable from JW Sieg will be here to sample some great German beers! In the meantime, here’s this week’s tasting lineup:

    Epic Fest Devious; Salt Lake City, UT–6.1% ABV: This under-the-radar Marzen is just back in stock. Fest Devious is a richer-feeling Oktoberfest option with a sweeter malt character balanced by a subtle hop addition. In stock!

    Amiata Contessa; Arcidosso, Tuscany, Italy–7.5% ABV: Just arriving in Virginia from the Vanburg & DeWulf portfolio is this “Italian Pale Ale” from Birra Amiata, located in the heart of Tuscany. Contessa has the full-flavored, touch-of-sweet malt character many other Italian Ales share, but a moderate bite from American hops gives it a hint of the modern IPA style. Come try this beautiful Italian beer! Arrives Friday, 9.20.13.

    Lagunitas Daytime IPA; Petaluma, CA–4.65% ABV, 54 IBU: A number of you have been waiting for this beer to return; well, wait no more! Daytime IPA is Lagunitas’ not-quite-session-but-session-strength beer, with a surprising intensity to its bitterness. If you’re a fan of the distinct, sharp hoppy style of Lagunitas IPAs, you’ll love Daytime and if you’ve tried it before you already know how great it is. In stock!

    Smuttynose Rhye IPA; Portsmouth, NH–7% ABV, 65 IBU: I love rye malt beers, and Smuttynose has pulled off quite the trick with this one. Rhye IPA is based off Smuttynose’s Finest Kind IPA–a beer that I’ve never been a huge fan of personally, though it’s well-made and very popular. Rhye IPA subs in 30% rye malt into the Finest Kind recipe, and uses four times the amount of Amarillo and Simcoe for dry-hopping. Spicy rye malt and a ton of piney, bitey hops makes me happy and I think you all will dig it, too. Arriving Friday, 9.20.13.

    Check out other new stock below, and I’ll see you this weekend.

    Tuesday Tapping at Mad Fox Brewing

    Tuesday Tapping of Two Hemispheres IPA

    Two Hemispheres IPA – 7.0%

    This “wet” hopped IPA brings together Australian Galaxy hops as a kettle addition along with 150 lbs. of American Citra Hops flown in freshly picked from the Pacific Northwest. An amber hued color with citrus & passion fruit, along with fresh herbal notes. This wet-hopped brew will be of limited availability during the hop harvest time of the year (right now!)

Virginia Craft Beer Events for June 15th – June 21st

This week has been full of great news.  It started of with the announcement of the Shenandoah Valley Brewing Co opening for business, today, in Staughton.   Now as I understand it, this is a homebrew shop as well as a Nano-Brewery.  In any case, congrats to them.
Capital Ale House started their “Daily 180″ this week as well.  Stop by from 4-7pm  each day to enjoy 1/2 price draft beers, 1/2 price wines by the glass and 1/2 price cocktails. The “Daily 180″ will be running through Labor Day.
Finally, yesterday it was announced that a new brewery in Staughton will be opening in the next several months.  Redbeard Brewing secured a location and will have a soft opening some time in July/Aug with a hard opening later this year.  Check out the link for details.

One last detail:  Next weekend is the Northern Virginia Brewfest.  Be sure to get your tickets now!

So with that let’s get into our updates:

The folks at Blue & Gray Brewing have teamed with a distillery (Bowmans) and a few wineries have put together a Grapes & Grain Trail and it kicks off this Sat.  Come on out and enjoy a chance to sample wine, bourbon and beer as well as listen to music and enjoy some food.
If you’re in the Dugspur/Roanoke area head over to both Foggy Ridge Cider and Blacksnake Meadery for their Music, Mead and Cider event.  It starts at 11 and ends at 5.  Enjoy a sample from both the cidery and meadery plus some great music.

Mon June 18th:
Come out to the Father’s Day Beer Dinner at Dogfish Head Alehouse.  The dinner starts at 7pm and is $65 per person.  Reservations are required.

Those of you in Richmond and have been eagerly waiting on the Blue Mountain Barrel House beers, well Mekong is hosting a release party starting at 5pm.  Come by to enjoy the first four to be released.

Thur June 21st:
It’s the first day of Summer, that must mean it is time for the Summer Sol-Stache party at Mekong.  Yep, it’s back and lots of beer will be flowing.  Remember to come sporting your best mustache to win prizes.  The fun starts 2pm.

If you are looking for some thing a little tamer then how about another episode of Beer Theater featuring Laughing Dog Brewing?  This will take place at Capital Ale House Music Hall.  There is a $10 cover charge.  Starts 5:30pm.
Magnolia at the Mills is hosting a Beer & BBQ  beer dinner.  Cost is  $75 per person and reservations are required.  Better hurry space is going quickly.
