Rocky Ridge Reserve is the sixth and final cider from Blue Bee’s inaugural 2012 harvest. The name Rocky Ridge was the names of our part of town before it was incorporated as Manchester. During the Rocky Ridge years, barrels were used for cider fermentation and aging. We will crack open the first bottle of Rocky Ridge Reserve at noon so we hope that you will take a moment come and taste some of the fruits of our labor. Weekly Beer Tasting at Arrowine

    Beer News & Tastings

No, HopSlam is not in yet. Moving on…

Before I get to anything else, I encourage you to come check out our new, expanded beer selection the next time you’re in the neighborhood. I didn’t get this extra shelf space on my charm alone–it’s due to the incredible support you all have shown for the work we’re doing here in Arrowine’s Beer Department. I try to say it regularly, but thank you guys so much–you make this possible.

    Now…

The Day of the Large American Football Spectacular is coming up–I am refraining from using any combination of the word “Game”, “Big”, and “The” in order to avoid trouble with massive pro-sports entities seeking trademarks for such phrases–and we’re stocking up big on all of our favorites so you can have them handy from kickoff straight through Monday afternoon when you’ve called out “sick”. On top of that, we’re bringing in a long-awaited new release and stocking up for final runs on a couple of our favorite seasonal beers. As ever, items are subject to delivery hiccups and just plain being popular and selling out.

    February 1st, 2014
    1:00-4:00 pm

Cigar City Florida Cracker–Tampa, FL; 5% ABV, 15 IBU: This Belgian-style Witbier from the brewers of Jai Alai IPA shows a surprising amount of floral and citrus flavors for its style, but is every bit as refreshing and enjoyable as Witbier should be. Can up! In stock!

Sweetwater 420 Extra Pale Ale–Atlanta, GA; 5.4% ABV: Since 1997, Atlanta’s Sweetwater Brewing Company has been flying the flag for Southern craft beer. Finally, Sweetwater has arrived in Virginia with its most popular beer, 420 Extra Pale Ale. 420′s lower ABV and Cascade/Centennial hops make for a punchy, focused Pale Ale with plenty of hop flavor and just enough bite. There’s a chance we run out of this week’s shipment before Saturday, but I think we’re getting enough to make it; if not, we’ll sub something in and do it another time. In stock!

Alltech’s Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale–Lexington, KY; 8.2% ABV: I just realized the other day we hadn’t featured Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale yet, so I figured I’d fix that post-haste. I first tried BBA over the summer staying with friends on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky; my friend manages one of the marinas on the Lake and kept telling me they had a beer on tap I had to try. Turns out he was dead right–BBA is a delicious hybrid of Irish Red and English Pale Ales aged in Bourbon barrels that are as fresh as you can get, straight out of Alltech’s own distillery. BBA isn’t subtle or complex, but it’s tasty as hell and a fun beer to have around the house. If you haven’t, you really should. In stock now; more arriving Friday 1.31.14.

Sixpoint Hi-Res–Brooklyn, NY; 11.1% ABV, 111 IBU: From our friends at Better Beer Authority: “If you are expecting a Resin on steroids you will be disappointed. Rather this has big tropical fruit notes on the nose and palate…a beautifully clear beer…a real treat…a well crafted beer and a cool take on what you can do with hops when you are not going for a palate destroying hop bomb.” Can’t argue with that. Arriving Friday, 1.31.14.

Take a look at more of this week’s arrivals below, and I’ll see you this weekend at Arrowine. Go (insert Sports Team of your preference here)!

Virginia Craft Brewing Reviews featuring Adroit Theory B/A/Y/S Batch 004

Today I review Adroit Theory Brewing’s B/A/Y/S Batch 004. Be sure to watch to the end and find out how you can get some cool stickers from them.

also as promised Adroit Theory Manifesto

There used to be music.
Beats that soothed the savage beast.
Defiant intervals. Sings of life.
The music was murdered.
Smothered in conformity.
Choked in Greed.
Commerce was the new score.
Utility the conductor.
Sure there were headphones.
Everybody wore them.
But it was to keep the music out.

Suburban streets are silent now.
Haunted houses: rows of Grey drones
standing at blind attention.
Solemn sedans: unmarked hearses.
Off to the Office.
The market. The grave.
No Music. Except.
There are a few. Those who hear the
throbbing in their heads. The ragged
rhythm of their breathing.
The pulse in the void.
It’s getting louder.
Caged in their ribs is a rattle.
A Hum. Listen.
A scream? A song?
A revolution.
