5:30-9pm: Acoustic sets from Exebelle and the Rusted Cavalcade
Taking inspiration from Virginia’s folk tradition as well as the rural country-rock of Ryan Adams, the Band, and Neil Young, songwriters Philip Heesen and C.E. Wright formed Exebelle & the Rusted Cavalcade in September 2007. The current line up includes Philip Heesen, Kerry Hutcherson, previously with local group Copper Sails, bassist Ryan Owenby (of former Motion Picture Demise), Virginia native Ben Willson (member of Mason Brothers) on piano and vocals, and Greg Butler (member of Goldrush, Long Arms) on drums. The band mostly plays original music when performing live, but set lists also include covers of songs from Americana classics such as the Band, Neil Young, Ryan Adams, Whiskeytown, Tom Petty, the Eagles, and more.
“Although headquartered in metropolitan Richmond, Exebelle & the Rusted Cavalcade brew up a rural sound inspired by folk, country and Southern rock. The band’s lineup took shape in 2007 and includes three songwriters, all of whom cut their teeth in local rock groups before joining the project. Taking a page from Ryan Adams — another country-loving Southern boy with deep ties to rock ‘n’ roll — the group released three EPs in 2009 alone, including the wonderful ‘Antipoison Creek Sessions’ and the upcoming ‘Vivement l’Automne!’” – from The Washington Times’ Andrew Leahey in an article entitled, “Top 9 Unheard LPs of 2009.”
