Weekly Beer Tasting at Arrowine #Arlington
Beer News & Tastings
I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving holiday. Don’t think for a second, though, that because we’re about to hit the end of the year there’s going to be any letup in the new beer releases or brewery debuts in our area–we have both happening this week. In addition to our continuing Holiday Cellar Sale, there are some great new beers to pickup and we’re going to sample some this Saturday. For more info on new arrivals, read below. Please bear in mind that beers listed are subject to selling out, delivery oddities, and mysterious happenstance.
Arrowine Saturday Beer Tasting
December 7, 2013
Dogfish Head Piercing Pils, Milton, DE–6% ABV, 35 IBU: This new winter seasonal from Dogfish is a departure in many ways. Not only is it a lighter beer, replacing the traditional winter bottling run of Chicory Stout, but it’s a Pilsner from a brewery which has only released less than a handful over the years. With Piercing Pils, Dogfish attempts to meld a Czech-style Pils with a classic Perry, using pear juice and white pear tea. The pear cuts through the citrusy hop notes, and the beer has a crisp, clean feel that makes for an off-centered winter beer. In stock!
Foothills Hoppyum IPA, Winston-Salem, NC–6.2% ABV, 70 IBU: Surprise! We’d heard that North Carolina’s Foothills Brewing was going to become available here in Northern Virginia sometime soon; well it turns out that the time is this week! Hoppyum is a Simcoe-heavy IPA that for it’s strength is very drinkable thanks to its dry finish and bite. Hoppyum has a delightful mix of piney earthiness and classic citrus flavors. In addition, look for Foothills Torch Pils and People’s Porter; which also hit this week. Arriving Friday, 12.6.13.
Lost Rhino Hop3Star, Ashburn, VA–10.1% ABV, 150 IBU: So for the less “session-y IPA” minded among us, there’s Lost Rhino’s new Hop3Star. At a powerful 10.1% ABV and a massive 150 IBU, Hop3Star is brewed with mangoes to add an extra round fruit note to…well, I almost said “balance” the intense bitter hop character, but that’s not quite it, is it? The mango does accentuate the citrus from the hops, which makes Hop3Star slightly more approachable as an Imperial IPA. Won’t last long, so get in on this quickly. In stock!
Victory Oak Horizontal, Downington, PA–11% ABV: I’ve been a big fan of Victory’s Old Horizontal Barleywine for a very long time (more on Old Horizontal below), but about a year ago a friend who makes regular trips to Pennsylvania started telling me about this bourbon barrel-aged version and how great it was. Finally, Oak Horizontal has arrived and we’ll all get to try it out for ourselves. Three months in bourbon barrel contribute rich flavor and take some of the edge off of the young Barleywine. This is a real treat for Victory fans and Barleywine drinkers alike. In stock!
As always, thanks for reading and I’ll see you this weekend.

Beer School at Brew #Chesterfield
Today (Saturday 12/7) at 4 pm, Brew will be hosting our weekly beer school. This week, the topic is high alcohol beers. Typically, beer averages around 5-6% alcohol by volume, but there is a whole other world which lives above 10%. We’ll be exploring that world today, so be ready for some big flavors. Free beer samples as always and we hope to see y’all out here!

Hardywood Bourbon GBS Release Party at Mekong Restaurant #Richmond
Because beer is the answer!
Join us for a very special cask conditioned pin of Bourbon GBS to get you in the holiday spirit!
About Bourbon GBS:
Hardywood Gingerbread Stout, described by BeerAdvocate as “freagin’ Christmas in a bottle,” is an imperial milk stout brewed with vanilla beans, cinnamon, fresh Casselmonte Farm baby ginger and Bearer Farms wildflower honey. Gingerbread Stout is then matured in Virginia bourbon barrels, where it adapts an incredibly mellow character with oak, caramel and bourbon undertones, and emerges 12 weeks later as Bourbon GBS. A festive blend of spice character laces this rich, chocolatey stout, which warms the palate and the soul.
